Turning points

November 14th, 2024

Payton Turner is a 4th year in the College of Arts and Sciences, and is majoring in Economics. His TEDxUVA talk discusses how, “by stepping out of our comfort zones to explore the world, we can embrace new cultures, gain unique insights into the challenges and triumphs of others, and broaden our own perspectives. these experiences not only enhance our ability to empathize, but equip us with valuable skills.”

Thomas Davies is a 3rd year in the College of Arts and Sciences, and is double-majoring in Political Philosophy, Politics, and Law and History. His TEDxUVA talk discusses how, “the invention of tubed paint allowed artists to change the focus of their art and change our conception of artwork as they created more emotional and impressive art.”

Ying Lei Pham is a 1st year in the College of Arts and Sciences, double-majoring in Public Policy and Leadership and Global Public Health. Her TEDxUVA talk explores how “the new vending machines sweeping across the nation aren’t just satisfying midnight cravings - they’re saving lives. Can universities implement this technology to address the ongoing opioid epidemic?”

Atty Ehui is a 3rd year in the College of Arts and Sciences, and is majoring in Foreign Affairs. In her TEDxUVA talk, Atty addresses how “so many of us care more about what others think of us rather than how we feel about ourselves, constantly seeking their approval. But I’ve learned and want to to share that real dignity comes from how far one is willing to resist that pressure.”

Lauren Laporta is a 2nd year in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Computer Science. In her TEDxUVA talk, she seeks to “challenge the belief that AI’s success must come at the expense of human creativity, showing instead how generative AI depends on human innovation and proposing economic policies that enable AI firms and artists to thrive together.”

Will Hancock is a 3rd year in the College of Arts and Sciences and is double-majoring in Economics and English (Area Program for Poetry Writing). His TEDxUVA talk discusses how “honor’s new system [at UVA] restores students to our Community of Trust through groundbreaking sanctions.”
